Taus Chess Set

This chess set began as a personal project in 2016 with the aim of learning new techniques in modelling and mould making. Each piece began as a hand-sculpted model, moulded and cast in porcelain before firing, hand sanding and finishing.

Extensive historical research was undertaken in order to inform the design of the set. The pieces pay homage to the game's long history which dates back to before the 6th century. First known as 'Chaturanga' in Persia, or 'Chatrang' in India, the game consisted of (and still consists of) a board of 64 squares with 16 pieces per side, simulating a battle. The game eventually found roots within every country from Persia and India, throughout the Arab world to Europe and beyond. As it travelled, the rules remained almost untouched, but the pieces themselves changed to reflect local culture, politics and religion.
